SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) reelected Masoud Barzani as President of the party after its congress commenced on Thursday.

The congress began in the city of Duhok and it’s set to continue for the next two days, marking the 14th congress of the KDP since December 2010 during which Masoud Barzani was reelected as the party’s president.

Meanwhile, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani was reappointed as his first deputy, and Prime Minister Masrour Barzani was elected as his second deputy.

According to the KDP by-law, the congress should be held once every four years.

KDP has blamed the war against the Islamic State (ISIS) as well as the Covid-19 pandemic for the party’s unavailability to hold its congress for such a long while since 2010.

In 2018 when the latest parliamentary elections of the Kurdistan Region took place, KDP won 45 seats, occupying the top government positions, including the president, prime minister, and deputy parliament speaker.
