Directorate of Education in Kirkuk bans any flag in Kirkuk except for Iraq’s

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kirkuk General Directorate of Education has banned any flag on Wednesday except for the Iraqi flag at all educational centers and schools there.

The General Directorate of Education in Kirkuk has issued a directive seen by Esta Media Network, banning any flag except Iraq’s.

No flag is allowed to be risen or used at all educational centers there, including the Kurdistan Region Flag.

Kirkuk lies in an oil-rich and ethnically mixed part of the country. Control over the city has been contested by Kurdish and Iraqi authorities.

Kurdish forces used to control the city when the Iraqi army fled during the Islamic State offensive back in 2014. However, the Iraqi forces retook the city in the wake of the Kurdish referendum for independence in 2017.
