SULAIMANI (ESTA) — A source on Saturday revealed that influential Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and head of the Iraqi al-Fateh alliance Hadi al-Amiri would likely meet shortly in Najaf.
A Source inside the Shiite coordination framework has revealed to Iraqi media that Sadr and Amiri’s meeting would likely take place at the end of this week in Najaf amid the ongoing tensions between the rivals in Baghdad.
The rivalry between cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and the Shiite coordination framework shows the deep divisions within Iraq’s Shiite community, which makes up about 60% of Iraq’s population of over 40 million people.
The inter-Shiite power struggle has left Iraq in the longest political deadlock.
The impasse, now in its tenth month since the MPs has failed to convene inside the parliament to vote for a new government following October 2021 election, That’s the longest in the country since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion reset the political order.
Up to this point, the country has been without a president and prime minister because of the stalemate.
