SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Two civilians were killed in an attack by Islamic State (ISIS) militants in Jalawla in Diyala province on Friday, according to information Esta Media Network has obtained.

A group of ISIS militants attacked villagers of Islah village with snipers and mortar shells on Friday night, killing two civilians including an elderly woman.

Another civilian and two Iraqi soldiers were wounded in the attack.

Islah village is located in Jalawla, also known as Gulala in Kurdish. Jalawla is one of the disputed territories claimed by both the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the federal government.

Iraq declared victory over Islamic State in December 2017 but the militants have regrouped in the Hamrin mountain range which extends into the northern provinces – an area described by officials as a “triangle of death”.
