SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The local security forces (Asayish) in Sulaimani have seized 149 Kilograms of Methamphetamine, the directorate announced on Thursday.
In a statement, the general directorate of the Sulaimani security forces said that it has seized 149 kilograms of narcotic substances in two different activities.
“Amid the first activity, conducted on June 14th, 94 kilograms of Methamphetamine have been seized, that imported from outside of the Kurdistan Region,” Asayish said.
In the second activity as mentioned in the statement, on July 25th, 57 more kilograms were seized.
“It was concealed inside motor oil cans and prepared to be exported from Sulaimani to the other cities of the Kurdistan Region” and, “A suspect was detained as well,” it said.
Drug trafficking has gone up inside the Kurdistan Region side by side with consumption of it, according to authorities. Border areas turned into a hotspot for Narcotic business as well as distribution.
the business became more frequent, in particular in those areas that have shared borders with Iran, officials have stated most of the drug substances are imported illegally by smugglers, and they utilized harsh geographical conditions.
Kurdish officials have warned that drug trafficking threatens to become an epidemic if anti-narcotics forces fail to curtail its rise in the Kurdistan Region.
