SULAIMANI (ESTA) — A member of the Iraqi council of representatives on Monday said parliament will hold a session this week to elect the president of the republic.
A Shiite coordination MP Murtaza al-Saidi said, “The Iraqi Council of Representatives will convene this week to elect the President for the country”.
“The coordination framework awaits for the Kurdish parties to reach an agreement and decide on a candidate for the position,” Saidi said.
“If the Kurdish parties could not reach an agreement to decide on the position, the strongest choice is repeating the 2018 scenarios for the presidential election” Saidi added.
Iraq held its latest parliamentary election in October 2021, however, since then a new government has not been formed due to a deep disagreement between the political parties.
Since then, the country trapped in a prolonged political stalemate, almost nine months passed, the new cabinet is not been formed yet, Prime Minister, as well as the Country’s president position, has remained vacant so far.
Iraq’s prime minister Position remains vacant unless the president is already elected and appoints a figure, then the cabinet can be formulated according to Iraqi law.
Under a power-sharing system designed to avoid sectarian conflict, Iraq’s president is a Kurd, its prime minister a Shia, and its parliament speaker a Sunni.
