SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Almost nine months passed since last Iraq’s parliamentary election in October 2021 but the new cabinet has not been formed yet, and a member of the Iraqi Parliament said on Wednesday it is possible that the next Prime Minster elected from independent nominees.
The political disagreement has hindered the government formation process, the Iraqi Council of Representatives had failed three times since the October elections to elect a president and then elect a new Prime minister.
“Shiite coordination framework’s meeting continues, in particular with Sovereignty Alliance and al-Azim alliance as well as independent MPs in favor of government formation,” said MP from the coordination framework Ibtisam Hilali.
Iraq has faced the longest political deadlock over the obstacles encountered in the country regarding forming the new cabinet.
The stalemate has worsened after Shia cleric Muqtadal al-Sadr whose party was declared as the major winner of the last elections with gaining 73 seats in the Iraqi Parliament had decided to withdraw from government formations when they failed to reach an agreement particular with the coordination framework.
The Sadrist movement left 73 seats vacant in the Iraqi council of representatives on June 16, therefore Hilali added that “difficult challenges face the coordination framework on government formation after Sadr withdrew in Parliament”
Hilali continued, “The coordination has carried the duty of government formation, and its party has consulted with almost political parties in order to establish a strong government that be able to reach Iraq into the shore of calmness”
Under power distribution system that is structured to prevent sectarian conflict, Iraq’s president is a Kurd, its prime minister a Shia, and its parliament speaker a Sunni.
“Iraq’s public opinion anticipates the coordination framework to form a powerful government, there is probable cause to choose the next PM inside independent nominees in the result, the elected person would have the ability to rescue Iraq and handle the current crisis”.
