SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The cholera outbreak in Sulaimani originated from contamination of water reservoirs , said the general director of the city’s health Sabah Hawrami in a new-conferences on Monday.
In a news conference joined by the Kurdistan Region minister of health Saman Barznji. Sulaimani’s water reservoirs are contaminated and resulted in Cholera outbreak, Hawrami Said.
“The municipality has taken measures to clean the water resources,” he said.
“The Kurdistan Region government as well allocated 800 million dinars as an emergency budget aimed for providing medical supplies” he added.
The government’s failure to manage Sulaimani water supplies is the major reason for the illness outbreak, thus linked to the irresponsibility of the Kurdistan Region municipality ministry. They had failed to maintain the cleanness of the water reservoirs, Hawrami further stated.
At least 200 inmates in Sulaimani Prison have been infected with Cholera. Several deaths have been reported among them as well, according to Barznji’s words.
“This massive amount of infection among the inmates indicates water and food contamination in the prison,” Barznji said.
Earlier on Saturday, health officials in Sulaimani announced a state of emergency amid Cholera outbreak. After the hospitals have received unexpected cases of diarrhea and vomiting.
So far eight deaths were reported from the illness, according to the officials.
Cholera is a bacterial disease usually spread through contaminated water. Cholera causes severe diarrhea and dehydration. Left untreated, cholera can be fatal within hours, even in previously healthy people.
The illness is often mild or without symptoms, but can sometimes be severe and life-threatening.
Cholera becomes more common during the hot seasons particularly summer in the Kurdistan Region due to high-temperature degrees.
