SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Head of Environment Protection and Improvement authority in the Kurdistan Region said in a press conference on Monday, that the Region faced desertification.
Head of Environment Protection and Improvement authority Abdul Rahman Siddiq said the Kurdistan Region witnessed a critical water decrease in its resources.
“There are areas in Garmian that completely faced desertification,” he said.
“We must develop of relying on green energy for the residential complexes” he added.
Meanwhile on Sunday Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) said in a statement, that groundwater in the Region decreased by 500 meters, and at least 300 water wells have been dried up due to low rainfalls and the drought.
The impacts of climate change have covered the entire country, seeing itself in low rainfalls, intense waves of dust storms, and a decrease in water levels on both surfaces as well as underground.
Moreover, Turkey and Iran are holding back water to fill reservoirs behind dams that both countries have built in the past years and thus preventing water flow into Iraq’s territory including Kurdistan Region.
