PUK President meets Head of Coalition to Defeat ISIS

PUK President and the head of Coalition to Defeat ISIS in Iraq in the Iraqi capital.

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Bafel Talabani on Friday in Baghdad met the commander of anti-ISIS Operation Inherent Resolve, Maj. Gen. Matthew McFarlane, according to a statement.

In a meeting, Talabani and McFarlane discussed the latest developments and steps of combating terror as well as the support and coordination between the Peshmerga forces and the Iraqi army with coalition forces, according to a statement from the PUK president’s office.

Moreover, the two sides laid emphasis on succeeding in the process of unification and reorganizational of the Peshmerga forces on the foundation of new training and the formation of advanced solid forces.

For his part, President Talabani referred to the latest changes within the Peshmerga forces and succeeding the “national” steps.

“The unification of the Peshmerga forces is continuing. In that framework several units and brigades are currently on intense military training,” Talabani said.

Talabani further asked the Coalition Forces to continue their support for the Peshmerga forces for further improvement of the technical military capabilities of the Kurdish forces.

The officials have also highlighted the mechanisms and assistance between Peshmerga, the Iraqi army, and the coalition forces, “asking all sides to assist each other, particularly in the areas that have security vacuums for the sake of preserving the region’s security.”
