SULAIMANI (ESTA) — At least 13 Islamic State (ISIS) militants were killed in operations carried out by the Iraqi forces in three provinces, Iraq’s military said on Friday.
In a statement, Iraqi security media cell said the counter-terrorism forces launched an operation against ISIS militants in Kirkuk, Nineveh and Diyala provinces between May 20 and June 3.
The militants were killed in a hideout on Qarachogh mountain on Friday, the Iraqi military added.
The location of the militants was found based on confession of “one of the terrorists” who was arrested by the intelligence units, according to the military.
Islamic State controlled roughly a third of Iraq between 2014 and 2017. Iraqi forces and Kurdish troops backed by U.S.-led Coalition forces as well as Iran-backed Shia militias defeated the militant group in 2017, but its members still roam areas of northern Iraq and northeastern Syria.
