Iraqi forces wound Peshmerga at checkpoint in Kirkuk: reporter

News

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi forces wounded a member of the Peshmerga forces in Kirkuk province late on Tuesday, Esta Media Network reporter said.

Esta’s reporter in Kirkuk said the Iraqi forces opened fire at two members of the Peshmerga forces at a checkpoint in the province, injuring one.

The Peshmerga were a father and a son and they were transferred to a hospital in Sulaimani city, the reporter added.

On May 3, the Iraqi forces arrested eight members of the Peshmerga forces for several hours at Smail Bag checkpoint in Kirkuk province.

“The Iraqi forces’ excuse to arrest the Peshmerga was that they had weapons while they were travelling through the checkpoint,” a security source told Esta Media Network.

The federal government retook control of the disputed areas claimed by both Baghdad and Erbil from the Kurdish forces in October 2017 in the wake of the independence referendum. Since then, security has been run by the Iraqi forces.
