U.S. to hold virtual conference on post-COVID-19 economic priorities in Kurdistan

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The United States will hold a virtual conference on economic priorities after the coronavirus pandemic in the Kurdistan Region with the participation of American and Kurdish officials, according to the U.S. chamber for commerce.

The U.S.-Iraq Business Council, part of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, will hold a virtual conference on Post-COVID-19 Economic Priorities in the Kurdistan Region on November 23-24, the chamber said in a post on its website.

It will feature high-level speakers from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), the U.S. government, and leading American companies doing business in the Region, the U.S. chamber added.

“The U.S. Chamber’s U.S.-Iraq Business Council welcomes you to join us for a virtual conference on Post-COVID-19 Economic Priorities in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq,” the U.S. chamber said.

“Conference discussion topics will include enabling the keys to economic growth, investment opportunities in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, prioritizing food security, and the future of U.S.-Iraq energy partnerships,” it added.

KRG Representation in the United States said in a tweet on November 19 that Prime Minister Masrour Barzani would be delivering remarks during the virtual conference.

KRG Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani and U.S. State Department’s Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Joey Hood will talk about ways to enable the Region’s economic growth, according to the KRG’s representation.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy Mark Menezes will also discuss “U.S.-KRG energy partnership and further ways of expanding cooperation and development,” it said.

Regarding the American companies operating in the Region, the KRG representation said in a separate tweet that Honeywell, Citi, PepsiCo, and Cochlear would discuss their experience of working in the Region and Iraq.

KRG Minister of Finance and Economy Awat Sheikh Janab, Minister of Planning Dana Mahmud and Chairman of the Investment Board Mohammed Shukri will speak about the government’s economic priorities on a panel during the conference.
