Iraq’s Coordination Framework to propose ‘new initiative’ to form new government: spokesman

The Coordination Framework calls on the federal court to annul the results

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraq’s Coordination Framework will propose a “new initiative” to form a new government in Baghdad, a spokesman for the State of Law coalition said on Wednesday.

“As the Coordination Framework, we will have a new initiative to get rid of this current political stalemate and to form a new government,” Baha Nuri told Esta Media Network.

The group will begin negotiations with a tripartite alliance between the Sadrist Movement led by Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, Taqaddum Party of Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).

“We will wait for the results of the meeting,” he added.

Iraq entered a political stalemate after the Council of Representatives failed to select a president in three sessions due to disagreements between the political parties.

Under a power-sharing system designed to avoid sectarian conflict, Iraq’s president is a Kurd, its prime minister a Shia and its parliament speaker a Sunni.

The tripartite alliance attempted to form the largest parliamentary bloc to elect KDP’s presidential candidate Rebar Ahmed, competing against incumbent Barham Salih of the PUK.

Following the alliance’s failure, Sadr said he would give the Coordination Framework the chance to form the country’s next government.

The 40-day window offered by Sadr started on April 2 on the first day of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

“We won’t abide by the 40-day of Sadr,” Nuri said, noting that a prime minister should be chosen who is “strong and able to resolve the issues in Iraq.”
