Heavy rains trigger flash floods in Erbil, damaging houses, cars

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Heavy rains once again triggered flash floods in the Kurdistan Region’s capital on Wednesday, causing damages to houses and vehicles of civilians.

A wave of heavy rains has hit the Kurdistan Region since Monday night, causing water to accumulate in several areas.

Esta Media Network reporter in Erbil said water entered more than 10 houses in Hiran City 1 neighborhood in Erbil on Wednesday following heavy rains.

A number of vehicles was also hit by floods, he added.

“I am glad at we don’t have casualties,” a resident told Esta Media Network.

It was the third occurrence of flooding in Erbil since 2021. In December, heavy rains caused flash floods in Region’s capital, killing twelve people.

More than 400 houses were affected by the flooding, Erbil governor Omed Khoshnaw said on December 19. As many as 867 vehicles were also damaged, including government’s vehicles, he noted.

The damage “is estimated at 20 to 21 billion Iraqi dinars”, he added.

In October, flash floods also caused severe damages to several places in Erbil. Authorities said home furnishing and equipment of 500 families were “completely destroyed” in the floods.

As many as 130 cars, 127 houses, two schools and a number of other projects were also damaged in the floods.
