SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Turkish military has established four new military bases in the Kurdistan Region’s Amedi district amid a new cross-border operation, Esta Media Network reporter said on Monday.
Esta’s reporter in Duhok said the Turkish military had stationed troops to the new bases in areas in Deraluk and Shiladze sub-districts in Duhok province.
The establishment of new bases comes as the Turkish military has launched a new cross-border operation against positions of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the Region.
In a statement, the Turkish defense ministry said the operation focused on the regions of Metina, Zap and Avasin-Baysan.
Turkish warplanes, helicopters, drones, commandos and special forces participated in the air and land operation, dubbed “Operation Claw Lock”.
Esta Media Network has learned that the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) has also deployed forces to Shiladze sub-district following Turkey’s operation.
Turkey regularly launches air strikes into the Kurdistan Region, a region into which it has repeatedly sent commandos, to support its offensives.
Reuters cited officials as saying they believe the Iraqi government is firmly on their side in fighting the PKK.
There was no immediate comment from the federal government.
