Suspects involved in killing of Asayish member fled to Erbil: sources

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Several suspects including Abdulla Kwekha Mubarak, who joined the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), have fled to Erbil after arrest warrants were issued for them over the killing of a member of the security forces in Chamchamal district, sources told Esta Media Network on Thursday.

A member of the Asayish (security) forces was shot in Chamchamal, west of Sulaimani city, late on Saturday. The Asayish member succumbed to his injuries at hospital on Sunday morning, according to Chamchamal mayor Ramak Ramazan.

Following the incident, a judge issued arrest warrants for Kwekha Mubarak and six others including his sons, brothers and cousins over the killing of the Asayish member.

A source in the Asayish directorate told Esta Media Network earlier this week that Mubarak’s son Bitwen had been named as the main suspect.

Sources told Esta Media Network on Thursday that the suspects had fled to Erbil before the court’s arrest warrants.

Mubarak is a well-known figure in Chamchamal, west of Sulaimani, and joined the Kurdistan Democratic Party last year.

Police Spokesman Sarkawt Ahmed said the suspects would be detained wherever they are seen.

“There are rumors and we were told about [their escape],” Ahmed told Esta Media Network.

“Police are investigating,” he said.
