SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The alliance between the Sadrist Movement, Sunni parties composing Sovereignty alliance and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) on Wednesday announced their candidates for the positions of Iraqi president and prime minister.
Head of the Sadrist Movement Hassan al-Azari announced a new alliance, National Liberation Alliance, between the three sides during a press conference in Baghdad.
Azari said KDP’s Rebar Ahmed is the alliance’s candidate for the presidency and Mohammed Jaafar al-Sadr for the country’s prime minister.
Ahmed is the current minister of interior in the Kurdistan Region and Sadr is Iraq’s ambassador to the UK.
“The alliance is stepping to form a national majority government and will complete its promise to reform and serve the nation through a clear and transparent program,” he added.
The announcement of the new alliance comes as the Iraqi Council of Representatives is scheduled to hold a session on Saturday to vote to select a new president, who will later appoint a prime minister to form a new government.
