SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan’s (PUK) will was to go to Baghdad unitedly for talks on the formation of a new Iraqi government, Bafel Jalal Talabani said on Wednesday.

Talabani met with French Ambassador Eric Chevallier and Consul-General Olivier Decottignies in Sulaimani city on Wednesday.

They discussed the political situation in Iraq, the Kurdistan Region and the region as well as steps to form a new Iraqi government and challenges in front of the Kurds, Talabani’s office said in a statement.

“The PUK has been eager to unify the Kurdish front, and all steps were to go to discuss with Baghdad and the political parties as one team, and to start the negotiations having one political, national and Kurdistani paper,” Talabani said during the meeting.

“But this will was destroyed and the unity was abolished outside the will and interests of the Kurdish people,” he added.

Talabani further said there was still opportunity to form a government that serves its people, based on agreement and partnership, according to the statement.

“We don’t want to be a reason for destroying the home of Kurds, Shias and Sunnis,” he said. “Our efforts continue to protect the coexistence, which is our priority.”
