Building of Kurdistan Region’s Judicial Council

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Kurdistan Region’s Judicial Council has handed over to the federal Iraqi courts hundreds of wanted persons who were preset in Erbil, according to a Kurdish judge.

“There is great coordination between the two sides to facilitate the procedures of handover and the exchange of wanted persons,” head of Erbil District Court of Appeal Ismael Khoshnaw told Sabah Newspaper.

Khoshnaw said there was cooperation “at a very high level” between the supreme judicial council in Baghdad and the judicial council in the Kurdistan Region.

“The judicial council in the Kurdistan Region applies the federal judicial laws because it is part of the Iraqi state,” he added.

He further said joint committees had been formed between the Iraqi and Kurdish judicial councils to facilitate procedures for the implementation of arrest warrants, exchange information and to facilitate their transfer to the courts where arrest warrants were issued.

The Kurdish security forces have handed over dozens of Islamic State (ISIS) suspects to the Iraqi forces in the past months.
