SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Two members of Iraq’s federal police were killed after Islamic State (ISIS) militants attacked a military point in Kirkuk province, Iraqi media reported on Sunday.

A group of the militants attacked a federal police point with “light and medium weapons” near al-Tayyar village in Riyadh district in the province on Sunday, a security source told Shafaq News.

A federal policeman was also injured in the attack, according to the source.

ISIS militants sporadically carry out attacks against Iraqi forces and civilians in the provinces of Kirkuk, Diyala, Saladin, Baghdad, Anbar and Nineveh.

Separately, Iraqi fighter jets conducted an airstrike against an ISIS hideout in a hill near the village of Sheikh Yunis in Nineveh, killing six militants.

“Our security forces continue to punish ISIS terrorist gang members,” Iraq’s security media cell said in a statement on Sunday.

On Saturday, nine more ISIS militants were killed after Iraqi warplanes bombed the militant group in Azim area in eastern Diyala province.

The group was “responsible for the al-Azim incident in Diyala”, the military added.

Eleven Iraqi soldiers were killed after ISIS militants attacked a military base in the area on January 21. The attack was one of the deadliest targeting the Iraqi military in recent months.

ISIS controlled roughly a third of Iraq between 2014 and 2017. Iraqi forces and Kurdish troops backed by U.S.-led Coalition forces as well as Iran-backed Shia militias defeated the militant group in 2017, but its members still roam areas of northern Iraq and northeastern Syria.
