File – Smoke rises from an exploded land mine

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Nineteen people were killed by landmines in the Kurdistan Region last year, the Kurdish Mine Action Agency said on Tuesday.

The agency said in its annual report that it removed 1,894 landmines and 22,918 unexploded explosive ordnances (UXO) in 2021.

Landmines also wounded 23 more people during the year, it added.

The remnants date back more than three decades to the Iran-Iraq war between 1980 and 1988.

There are more than 3,300 minefields in the Kurdistan Region, according to the Kurdish mine action agency.
