Kurdistan president meets German defense minister in Erbil

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met with German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht in Erbil on Sunday.

The German minister arrived in the Kurdistan Region on Sunday afternoon, following her official visit to Baghdad.

The two sides discussed ongoing threat of Islamic State (ISIS) and “best ways” to confront ISIS resurgence and ideology, said Niyaz Barzani, head of foreign affairs and diplomacy at the office of the Region’s president.

The future of Germany’s military support for the Peshmerga forces and Iraqi security forces in the fight against ISIS, he said in a tweet.

Following the meeting, Lambrecht told reporters that the Peshmerga forces had fought against Islamic State (ISIS) militants for Europe and Germany.

“Good success has been achieved in the fight against ISIS,” she said.

“We have supported the Region since the beginning of the war and the new [German] government will continue with providing assistance to eliminate terror,” she added.

Earlier, She met with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi and her counterpart Juma Inad in Baghdad.

Kadhimi stressed the importance of bilateral relations between the two countries in “various fields, especially security, military and intelligence,” the premier’s office said.
