PUK co-president meets British parliamentary delegation in Sulaimani

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Co-President Bafel Talabani met with a group of British lawmakers in Sulaimani on Thursday.

Talabani received a British parliamentary delegation led by Gary Kent, Secretary of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG), in Dabashan area in Sulaimani, according to his office.

The two sides discussed the latest political, security and economic developments and parliament’s works as wells the legislature’s role in developing the society, observing the executive power and making laws, his office said in a statement.

They emphasized more coordination and consult between the Kurdistan Region and the UK to improve parliament’s works, the statement read.

Talabani said they want to “reorganize the principles of statehood and determine the characteristics of the authorities through the constitution, and to improve people’s lives politically, economically and socially”, the statement said.

He added that the PUK “wants to establish a constitution in the Region that have national consensus and the opinions of all parties and people, and should be written on the basis of interests and development of the Region’s experience.”

“It should also embody the right to citizenship, be united with the Iraqi constitution and be able to further serve the community,” he noted.
