SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Thursday laid the foundation stone for a factory project in Duhok province, that will make finger chips from locally-grown potatoes.
“Such projects are important and strategic to support the agriculture sector and to boost the Kurdistan Region’s economy,” Barzani said at the ceremony, attended by minister of agriculture and water resources Begard Talabani and Dutch ambassador to Iraq Michel Rentenaar as well as other officials.
The Jutiar Factory for French Fries will be built by K.H. Company, funded by Kurdish and Dutch investors. The project’s construction will cost nearly $10 million.
“The agriculture sector is one of the main foundations of economic development in any country,” Barzani said. “Any project that is built will become a cause for many other industrial projects.”
“Today’s project will provide thousands of job opportunities for farmers and workers in the province,” he added.
The factory will buy 100,000 tons of potatoes from farmers annually and make 500 factory jobs, according to the KRG.
The prime minister has laid foundation stones of several other projects across the Kurdistan Region in the past months. The Kurdish government is now building large sites to store and process wheat in Sulaimani and Erbil.
