SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdish security forces arrested three wanted persons in Sulaimani city on terrorism charges, the Iraqi defense ministry said on Wednesday.

In a statement, the defense ministry said the three people wanted by a court order were detained in coordination with the directorate of Asayish in Sulaimani province.

“The three were present in Sulaimani. They were thinking they would be far from the eyes of the security forces, but the joint coordination resulted in their arrest and they were handed over to the judiciary,” it added.

Recently, Iraqi security services have increased coordination with the security forces in the Kurdistan Region to detain people wanted by courts and suspects linked to Islamic State (ISIS).

On Tuesday, an Iraqi military spokesperson said the Kurdish security forces detained two ISIS members in Halabja after coordination with the Iraqi counter-terrorism forces.

Two other ISIS militants were detained in coordination with the Kurdish forces in Sulaimani province earlier this month.

The federal government announced victory over ISIS by the end of 2017 after Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led Coalition regained control of areas once captured by the militant group.

Despite its defeat, ISIS still poses a threat to the security and stability of the country as there are still sleeper cells in Iraq.
