SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi counter-terrorism forces detained two members of Islamic State (ISIS) in coordination with Kurdish forces in Sulaimani, a military spokesman said on Tuesday.
Yehia Rasool, spokesman of commander-in-chief of the Iraqi armed forces, said the counter-terrorism forces carried out a series of “successful operations” against ISIS militants in the country.
“One of the operations was carried out in the Kurdistan Region,” Rasool said in a tweet.
The security forces in Sulaimani detained two ISIS members in Halabja province after the Iraqi counter-terrorism forces provided them with intelligence information.
The Iraqi counter-terrorism forces also detained six other ISIS members in Makhmour, al-Shirqat and Baghdad, according to Rasool.
Recently, Iraqi security services have increased coordination with the security forces in the Kurdistan Region to detain ISIS suspects.
Two other ISIS militants were detained in coordination with the Kurdish forces in Sulaimani province earlier this month.
The federal government announced victory over ISIS by the end of 2017 after Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led Coalition regained control of areas once captured by the militant group.
Despite its defeat, ISIS still poses a threat to the security and stability of the country as there are still sleeper cells in Iraq.
