SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Two Islamic State (ISIS) members were detained in Sulaimani in coordination with Kurdish forces there, said a military official on Monday.

Yehia Rasool, spokesman of commander-in-chief of the Iraqi armed forces, said security forces arrested six ISIS militants in Baghdad, Anbar and Sulaimani.

Iraqi counter-terrorism forces arrested an ISIS member in Yarmouk neighborhood in Baghdad and two others in Anbar province, Rasool added.

The security forces also detained another ISIS “terrorist” in Fallujah district in the province of Anbar, according to Rasool.

“Two wanted terrorists were detained by the counter-terrorism forces in coordination with Asayish [security] in Sulaimani province,” Rasool said.

Recently, Iraqi security services have increased coordination with the security forces in the Kurdistan Region to detain ISIS suspects.

Last month, the Iraqi intelligence service said ISIS leader Bashar al-Adwani, who acted as head of “ISIS snipers”, was detained in Erbil.

The federal government announced victory over ISIS by the end of 2017 after Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led Coalition regained control of areas once captured by the militant group.

Despite its defeat, ISIS still poses a threat to the security and stability of the country as there are still sleeper cells in Iraq.
