SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) will hold its 14th Congress in May this year, an official in the party said on Tuesday (February 23).

Secretary of KDP Politburo Fazil Mirani told Esta Media Network that the party’s congress would be held on May 26 in Duhok.

The party planned to hold its congress last year, but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The KDP hasn’t held an all-party gathering over the past 11 years, though the party’s by-laws say it should be held every four years.

The KDP’s first Congress was held secretly in Baghdad on August 16, 1946, and its latest gathering was in Erbil on December 18, 2010.

Several Kurdish parties held their congress in the past years. The Kurdistan Justice Group (KJG) held its fourth congress in Sulaimani on February 18, re-electing party leader Ali Bapir and changing its name from the Kurdistan Islamic Group to the KJG.

The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) also held its congress in December 2019, electing Bafel Talabani and Lahur Sheikh Jangi as co-leaders of the party.

The Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU) also held its congress in the same month. The party re-elected Salahadin Bahadin as its leader.
