U.N. envoy pays two-day visit to Tehran to support Iraq stability

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — U.N. envoy to Iraq Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert paid a two-day visit to Iran this week aimed at supporting Iraq’s stability, UNAMI said in a statement on Monday.

The special representative of the U.N. secretary-general visited Tehran on Sunday and Monday for talks with Iranian officials on regional issues as part of efforts to support stability in Iraq, the statement read.

“The Special Representative has visited a number of regional countries, including Iran, before,” the UNAMI said.

“Such visits are in furtherance of UNAMI’s mandate under Security Council Resolution 2522, which includes the facilitation of regional dialogue and cooperation, including on the issues of border security, energy, trade, environment, water, infrastructure, public health, and refugees.”

Iranian media reported that Ali Akbar Velayati, an international adviser to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, met with Hennis-Plasschaert and expressed Iran’s readiness to provide any kind of assistance to Iraq, according to Xinhua news agency.

The U.N. envoy to Iraq asserted the importance of unity and integration of Iraq as well as the need to hold a free election in the country.
