PUK reveals new politburo members after recent successful congress

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has announced its new politburo members on Monday following the party’s recent congress.

The newly-elected PUK leadership council, led by party President Bafel Talabani, held a meeting in Sulaimani to finalize the appointments earlier on yesterday, according to the PUK’s official media.

During the meeting, the leadership council elected several prominent figures to the political bureau. Among them are Qubad Talabani, the current deputy prime minister of the Kurdistan Region, Aso Mamand, Ahmad Hama Karim (also known as Sheikh Ahmadi Nokan), Burhan Saeed Sofi, and Darbaz Kosrat Rasul.

Additionally, Talar Latif, Jawan Ihsan, Rafat Abdullah, Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmad, Shalaw Kosrat Rasul, Shalaw Ali Askari, Emad Ahmad, Nizar Amedi, and Daro Sheikh Nuri were also elected as members of the political bureau.

Furthermore, Yousef Goran, Rewaz Fayeq (former head of the Kurdistan Region Parliament), Sarkawt Zaki, Rizgar Haji Hama, and Shuan Qadir were chosen as reserve members of the Political Bureau.

During the same meeting, Khasraw Gul, a prominent security figure in the Kurdistan Region who has previously served in the Region’s security council, was appointed as the representative of the PUK president in the party’s three leadership councils.

This development follows the conclusion of the PUK’s fifth congress, which took place in Sulaimani on September 27, 2023.

During the five-day event, Bafel Talabani was re-elected as the party’s president, while 60 other individuals were appointed as members of the leadership council.

The PUK, which was founded in 1975 by Talabani’s father, Jalal Talabani, has been a major player in Kurdish politics for decades.
