KDP faction chairman slams US for supporting homosexuality

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The US was concerned about prohibiting homosexuality promotion in the Kurdistan Region, Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) faction chairman said, slamming the annual report of the US State Department on the human rights situation in the Kurdistan Region.

The US State Department released its annual report on the human rights situation in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region last week, warning against backsliding human rights in the Kurdish Region.

The report also heavily criticized the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) for restricting liberty in the Region including the freedom of expression and the freedom of the press.

“If prohibiting promoting homosexuality is against human rights for them [US], we are against this concept,” said the KDP faction chairman at the Kurdistan Parliament, Zana Mulla Khalid in response to the report in a post to Facebook.

“We will continue to prevent such an ugly act,” he stressed, according to the post.

He further stated that the U.S. Consul General in Erbil was concerned after they proposed a bill last year to ban homosexual advocacy and promotion in the Kurdistan Region.
