PUK and KDP agree to continue talks over disagreements – statement

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) on Saturday agreed to continue talks following a meeting after months of conflictual relations.

The PUK and KDP met at the level of the politburo in Sulaimani to discuss the disagreements and internal disputes.

The PUK-KDP disagreements have escalated recently over several issues including “inequality” in revenue distribution by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), electoral law amendment as well a “systematic blockade” of Sulaimani by the KRG.

A joint statement following the meeting revealed that both sides agreed to continue the talks regarding the disagreements.

“Views were exchanged regarding the current developments,” the statement said.

The U.S. consulate general in the Kurdistan Region had earlier “welcomed” the PUK-KDP meeting in Sulaimani.

“We welcome our partners in the KRG taking steps to repair internal relations for the benefit of their people,” it said in a tweet.

“Working together, they can build a more resilient #Iraqi_Kurdistan_Region. A house united shall always prosper,” the tweet added.

Earlier, the PUK spokesman, Soran Jamal Tahir said they want to address the disagreements with the KDP through dialogue, he said in a press conference.
