SULAIMANI (ESTA) — A teenager died late Sunday night in a displacement camp in Erbil after several cabins caught fire.

A fire burned down several cabins in Bahrka camp which houses 960 internally displaced families.

The fire killed a teenager, who reportedly was 17 years old, according to eyewitnesses, while also four more others were injured as a result.

An electrical short circuit is believed to be the possible cause of the fire, in the meantime, there was no comment from local authorities over the incident.

Fire incidents inside displacement which are located in the Kurdistan Region are very common.

The incident mirrored another when on Friday in Sulaimani’s Ashti IDP camp, a fire broke out and killed a 2-year-old child after their tent caught fire.

Erbil’s Bahrka camp houses more than 960 families, numbering 4,732 individuals, over 1,300 of which are under 18, according to data provided by the UN’s Refugee Agency (UNHCR) for May.
