SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Four of Badinan political prisoners will be released from prison, the lawyers to prisoners told Esta Media Network on Sunday.
Since October 2020 Erbil Authorities have detained over 80 activists and journalists allegedly being charged with undermining the Kurdistan Region’s national security.
They have been accused of espionage and undermining and tried per law Number 21 of 2003 of terrorism.
The law states that “anyone deliberately in any form involved in an act aims at destabilizing security and stability of the Kurdistan Region or its sovereignty faced life sentence or imprisonment.”
The detainees are known as Badinan prisoners. However, some of them are currently in jail even without receiving a trial.
Two of the detained activists will be set free on Sunday after they finished their penalty term, said Bazhdar Hassan, the lawyer to the prisoners.
Hassan also stated that two more of them will be freed on Tuesday. Among those who are set to be freed are (Kovan Tariq, Nechiravn Badie, Sirwan Sharif, Mahmood Naji), according to the lawyer.
