PUK, KDP and Gorran agree to send high-level delegation to Baghdad

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani (C), PUK Co-leader Bafel Talabani (L) and Gorran General Coordinator Omer Said Ali meet in Erbil, December 8, 2020.

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Kurdistan Region’s major ruling parties agreed to send a high-level delegation to Baghdad for talks on suspending issues with Baghdad, according to a joint statement.

The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and Change Movement (Gorran) held a tripartite meeting in Erbil on Tuesday.

The three parties discussed issues between relations between Erbil and Baghdad, the political situation and the recent protests in the Kurdistan Region.

“[The parties] decided that a high-level political and governmental delegation visits Baghdad as soon as possible for talks with the federal government and the Iraqi parties to reach an agreement and to resolve the suspending issues,” the joint statement read.

They also stressed that peaceful and civil protests are a legitimate right of people.

The tripartite meeting was held amid anti-government protests in several towns and cities in the province of Sulaimani. Six protesters and a security guard of a political party were killed and scores were wounded during the demonstrations.

Angry protesters set fire to headquarters of the political parties and government offices including the directorate of education in Sharazoor and Asayish (security) directorate in Takiya.

Protesters demanded the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to pay their unpaid salaries.
