KRG is committed to paying monthly students stipends, says official

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — President of Sulaimani University Kosar Jamal on Tuesday reiterated that the government is committed to paying monthly stipends to the Students.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is committed to paying monthly stipends to university students for the academic year of 2022-2023, Jamal in a statement told Esta Media Network.

Jamal’s statement came as a fresh protest broke out at Sulaimani University last week during which the students boycotted the classes and rallied on the streets after rumors circulated that the government will not provide the stipends this year.

However, the protests shortly ended when the University officials investigated the matter, ensuring the students that their monthly stipends will continue.

It is worth mentioning that last year thousands of university and institute students protested in the Kurdistan Region, calling on the government to resume payment of their monthly stipends which were halted since 2014.

Students were paid 30,000-100,000 Iraqi dinars ($20.5-$68.5) per month.

Ultimately students were able to restore the payment especially after the endeavors were made by the President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Bafel Talabani.

Back then, Talabani met with representatives of the students several times and promised to support their demands.

In the meantime, Talabani tasked PUK governmental team to spare no efforts to restore the stipends and do everything possible to resolve their issues.

Speaking about the issues related to the University dorms, Jamal highlighted that Talabani has once again made initiatives.

“For this year, almost every issue of the dorms has been resolved with the endeavors of President Talabani, only a small number of unimportant issues are currently present, and we can easily resolve them daily,” The President of Sulaimani University said.
