SULAIMANI (ESTA) — President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Bafel Talabani paid a visit to newly elected Iraqi President Latif Rashid on Monday in Baghdad amid the presidential inauguration ceremony.
Iraq’s legislators on Thursday have named Kurdish politician Latif Rashid as President of the country, the position is traditionally occupied by the Kurds since the overthrow of Sadam Hussien’s regime in 2003.
Today Rashid arrived at the Iraqi presidential palace, Salam palace of Baghdad to commence his duties as Iraq’s president, in an inauguration ceremony attended by several political and government officials.
“PUK President Bafel Talabani who was also accompanied by the politburo, as the first delegation visited President Rashid in Salam Palace,” a statement from Talabani’s office said.
Despite renewing the congratulations, President Talabani wished success for President Rashid in his new endeavor.
Moreover, Talabani reiterated the full support of the PUK for the President for protecting the constitutional right of the Kurdish people.
He also wished Rashid to follow the late leader, President Mam Jalal’s path, seeing itself in harmony between the political forces as well as protecting the high interests, the statement said.
“Rashid’s election as fourth Iraqi President [since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003] is a great proud for the Kurdish people,” Talabani said.
“We will continue in our efforts with our friends in Baghdad so that to protect the Kurdish position and work to build a brighter future for all of the nations of Iraq,” Talabani added.
Speaking about the new Iraqi government President Talabani said, “We have complete faith in the real partnership and constitution in managing the country. “It’s the duty of the new government to serve all of the country’s individuals without differences and make great steps in the confrontation of corruption.”
