Authorities inaugurate Kirkuk International Airport

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi authorities inaugurated the long-waited Kirkuk International Airport on Sunday.

In a grand opening ceremony which was attended by senior military and political officials, Minister of Transport Nasser Bandar al-Shibli inaugurated the airport.

The Iraqi government in 2015 had approved plans to construct an international airport in Kirkuk province.

The airport has been built in the location of Hurriya military airbase on the outskirt of the city.

Back then, the base was held by the Defense Ministry of Iraq but revamped into an international airport.

Earlier Kirkuk Governor, Rakan Saeed Al-Jabouri, announced that “In the beginning, the airport will only host domestic and regional flights, including flights to Turkey, Iran, and Lebanon. In the future, it will consider international flights.”
