SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The speaker of the Iraqi Parliament on Tuesday announced that the legislature will hold a session on Thursday dedicated to electing a president of the republic.
Mohammed al-Halbousi, the speaker of the parliament has set the next Thursday for the legislature to vote for a new President as the country marked on year on Monday after holding elections.
“The session will be dedicated to the election of a President of the republic,” The Iraqi News Agency said.
Iraq held its latest general elections on October 10, 2021. However, over a year after elections were held, the Iraqi parliament has not been able to elect a new president due to excessive disagreement among the political parties.
Under the power-sharing system established in the Iraqi constitution to prevent sectarian conflict, Iraq’s Prime Minister is Shiite and the President is Kurd, meanwhile, its speaker of parliament is Sunni.
