SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi forces detained 26 Islamic State (ISIS) militants in Nineveh province, the Iraqi military said on Saturday.

Iraqi Security Media Cell said in a statement that the security forces set up ambushes and tracked ISIS militants in the Nineveh province.

“The detachments of the National Security Agency in Nineveh … managed to arrest 26 terrorists in accordance with judicial arrest warrants,” the statement read.

Iraqi forces have stepped up efforts to detain ISIS militants in the provinces of Kirkuk, Saladin, Nineveh, Anbar and Baghdad.

Iraq declared victory over Islamic State in December 2017 but the militants have regrouped in the Hamrin mountain range which extends into the northern provinces – an area described by officials as a “triangle of death”.
