SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State on Wednesday said that the U.S. is not taking sides in Iraq’s power struggle, hoping to see a formed government that is able to deliver for the best interests of the Iraqis.

U.S. Department of State Spokesperson Ned Price in a press briefing said, “We are not taking sides in Iraq’s power struggle”.

“We are prepared to work with the government that puts Iraqi sovereignty and the best interests of the Iraqi people at the heart of its agenda,” He said.

“We hope to see a formed government that is able to deliver for the best interests of the Iraqi people,” He added.

The Intra-Shiite power struggle over gaining the upper hand in the country has led Iraq into a record of months without a government, ten-month have passed since the latest parliamentary election in October 2021, parties have failed to reach an agreement and vote for a new cabinet.

The bitter rivalry among political elites, mainly among the country’s majority Shiites, has delayed the process to form a government. With the Shiites divided there are fears that Iraq could slide into intra-sectarian violent conflict.
