Coordination framework nominates Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani for Iraq’s premiership

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Shiite coordination framework on Monday confirmed in a statement that it has nominated Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani for Iraq’s premiership.

“Amid a meeting that held on Monday to vote for a nominee for Iraq’s premiership, all of the participant members were consistent to nominate Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani for the Country’s Prime Minister” the statement read.

Baghdad-born and former Human Right minister and former minister of labor and social affairs, ex-governor of Maysan province Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani, became a final choice for the coordination who also held many significant positions previously in the Iraqi government.

Political disagreement since the end of the latest general election which was held in October 2021, has hindered the parliament to elect the president of the country. The Iraqi council of representatives had failed three times due to a lack of quorum and boycotting the sessions by the MPs.

Iraq’s prime minister Position remains vacant unless the president is already elected and appoints a figure, then the cabinet can be formulated according to Iraqi law.

Under a power-sharing system designed to avoid sectarian conflict, Iraq’s president is a Kurd, its prime minister a Shia, and its parliament speaker a Sunni.
