SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The speaker of the Iraqi Parliament meeting with the head of factions began in Baghdad, according to the state news agency.
The Iraqi news agency reported, “Parliament Speaker Muhammad al-Halbousi held a meeting with heads of parliamentary blocs to discuss the agenda of the next session”.
“It also discussing the replacement of Sadrist bloc vacant seats,” INA said.
Earlier on Saturday, The Iraqi Council of Representative presidency directed an invitation letter late Saturday to the head of the parliament factions to convene on selecting a date for the presidential election.
The formation of the new Iraqi government is about to be kicked off after nine months of trapping inside a profound political stalemate. The country held its latest general election in October 2021, and since then, the MPs have failed to elect the president of the country due to deep political disputes among parties.
The Sadrist movement led by Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr holding 73 seats in the parliament had finally decided to withdraw from the formation of the new cabinet in the mid of June, leaving quite of seats vacant as the country’s political deadlock was deepened more.
As the result, Sadr’s political rivals have decided to begin to launch the process without the Sadrist movement, Shiite coordination framework is on the edge to declare a candidate for Iraq’s premiership.
