SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi ordered the formation of Maysan Operations Command, Iraq’s military said on Monday, following the assassination of an anti-drug judge.
“Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces ordered the formation of the Maysan Operations Command to assume command and control over all security services in Maysan governorate,” the security media cell said in a statement.
Kadhimi also appointed General Mohammed al-Zubaidi as the commander of the Maysan operations Command, it added.
Judge Ahmed Faisal specialized in drug cases was shot dead by unknown assailants as he was going home in the city of Amara, the capital of Maysan province.
In a statement, Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council condemned the assassination of the judge, calling on the prime minister to review duties of military officials responsible for the security of the governorate.
No group claimed responsibility for the attack.
AFP cited a forensic source as saying that the judge died of gunshot wounds to the head and chest.
The victim had been shot 15 times with a Kalashnikov, two sources said, according to AFP.
In September, another anti-drug judge escaped an assassination attempt in the same province.
