SULAIMANI (ESTA) — A militant group on Thursday claimed responsibility for a rocket attack on a military base housing Turkish troops in Nineveh province.
Earlier, a number of rockets were fired toward Zelkan military base in Bashiqa sub-district in the province.
A militant group calling itself “Ahrar Sinjar” claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it targeted the base with 18 rockets.
It criticized the Iraqi government for having “no response” to the Turkish airstrikes on Sinjar district.
On Tuesday, Turkish warplanes hit targets in Sinjar mountains and a refugee camp in Makhmour, southwest of Erbil.
The Turkish defense ministry said the strikes hit targets belonging to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
The Iraqi military condemned the airstrikes, calling on Ankara to halt airstrikes on the country.
Separately, Turkish warplanes also bombed targets of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) in Syria’s Derik, according to the defense ministry.
“Terrorists’ shelters, caves, tunnels, ammunition depots and so-called headquarters and training camps were targeted,” the ministry statement said, without specifying exactly when the strikes occurred.
Turkey regards the PKK and YPG as “terrorist groups”.
