SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi forces launched an operation against Islamic State (ISIS) remnants in Saladin province on Sunday, Iraq’s military said.

Iraqi Joint Operations Command said in a statement that the security forces had launched a large-scale operation to pursue ISIS remnants in Makhoul and Khanuka mountains in Saladin province.

Units from the Joint Operations Command, federal police, counter-terrorism forces, and Hashid al-Shaabi participated in the operation, it added.

Iraqi Security Media Cell said in a separate statement that the army’s warplanes had also targeted ISIS remnants in the area.

Iraq declared victory over Islamic State in December 2017 but the militants have regrouped in the Hamrin mountain range which extends into the northern provinces – an area described by officials as a “triangle of death”.
