SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi forces detained three “dangerous terrorists” in Saladin province, the country’s security media cell said on Wednesday.
In a statement, the security media cell said the intelligence units arrested three Islamic State (ISIS) members in Saladin as part of preemptive operations to dry up the sources of terrorism in the country.
“The first terrorist worked as an intelligence agent for ISIS terrorist group against our security forces in the Hamrin district, and worked to equip the terrorist detachments located on the Hamrin mountains,” it added.
The other two were ISIS fighters and detained in Tikrit district, the Iraqi military stated.
The Iraqi forces continue to target ISIS members and leaders in the country. Last month, the security forces detained a senior ISIS “military advisor” in Nineveh province.
Three ISIS leaders were also killed by the security forces in Anbar province in November.
In 2017, Baghdad announced victory over Islamic State (ISIS), and attacks in Iraqi cities have since become much rarer, although troops continue to fight ISIS sleeper cells in mountainous and desert areas.
The militants still mount deadly operations, mostly at night and in remote areas.
