SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Health authorities in Sulaimani on Thursday announced a two-month vaccination campaign against the coronavirus pandemic, as only 13 percent of people have been vaccinated in the province.
The campaign is part of a “bigger campaign” announced by the World Health Organization (WHO) for Iraq, sponsored by the German government, General Director of Health in Sulaimani Sabah Hawrami said.
The health official added that 25 teams were formed to increase the rate of vaccination in Sulaimani, which is at 13% now.
“The teams have been trained and they have full needs to increase the rate of vaccination,” he said in a press conference.
“The coronavirus situation in the province is very bad and people die daily due to lack of space in intensive care units,” he added.
Hawrami further said 95 percent of the patients infected with the virus were those who had not got vaccines.
Earlier, deputy director of health Herish Said Salim said a one-month vaccination campaign would be held across the Kurdistan Region.
Approximately 725,000 people have received coronavirus vaccines across the Kurdistan Region, according to the Iraqi health ministry.
As part of efforts to contain the virus, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) called on public servants to get vaccinated by the end of this year.
As of Sunday, the Kurdistan Region had recorded 363,661 cases and 6,492 deaths, according to figures released by the health ministry.
