Kurdish minister criticizes teachers for not receiving COVID vaccines

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdistan Region’s minister of health on Tuesday criticized teachers for receiving coronavirus vaccines, as the Region is still seeing a hike in cases.

Minister Saman Barzinji said there were still people who are being hospitalized due to infection to the coronavirus and that the intensive care units till receive patients daily.

He repeated calls for people to receive coronavirus vaccines in the vaccination centers.

The minister also called on teachers to get vaccine doses, including those who have already registered in the online system KurdVac.

“We mean to have 100% of teachers vaccinated,” Barzinji said in a press conference.

As of Monday, the Kurdistan Region had recorded more than 328,000 cases of COVID-19, including 5,819 deaths.

The Region began the new academic year on Sept. 14, with making mask-wearing mandatory as part of efforts to contain the virus.

More than 1.8 million students returned to schools to resume in-person classes across the Kurdistan Region.
